Allergy Symptoms

How Do I know If I have Allergies?


Allergies symptoms are sometimes hard to distinguish between symptoms from a common cold.  To determine if the symptoms are in fact an allergy or a cold pay attention to the timing of the symptoms.  With a cold, the symptoms will generally occur one at a time.  With allergies, the symptoms will most likely occur simultaneously.

The time of year can also help determine if your symptoms are from an allergy.  Spring and Fall tend to produce very high allergen levels in the air.

Common Allergy Symptoms:

  • Red, Itchy EyesSneezing
  • Itchy, Watery Eyes
  • Stuffed Nasal Passages
  • Chest Tightness (Breathing Difficulty)
  • Itchy, Sore Throat
  • Ear Pain
  • Runny Nose
  • Fatigue
  • Sleeplessness
  • Fever
  • earaches
  • Hives / Rash

Is it a Cold or an Allergic Reaction?

  COLD

ALLERGIES

Occurrence of Symptoms:

Symptoms will often appear one at a time: first sneezing, then a runny nose, then congestion.

Symptoms occur all at once.

Duration of Symptoms:

Lasts 7 to 10 days on average.

Continue as long as the person is exposed to the allergen.

Mucus:

Often a yellowish nasal discharge, due to an infection.

More common than with colds, especially when sneezing occurs two or three times in a row.

Sneezing:

Less common than with allergies.

More common than with colds, especially when sneezing occurs two or three times in a row.

Time of Year:

More common during winter.

More common in spring through fall, when plants are pollinating.

Fever:

May be accompanied by a fever.

Fever is not indicative of allergies.

Swollen Glands:

May be accompanied by swollen glands.

Swollen glands are not indicative of allergies.

Muscle or body aches:

May be accompanied by muscle or body aches.

Muscle or body aches are not indicative of allergies.

Cough:

Usually accompanied by a cough.

Sometimes accompanied by a cough.

Itchy Eyes:

Itchy eyes are not indicative of a cold.

May be accompanied by itchy eyes.
