What is an Allergy?
Allergies are normally defined as reactions to substances that you
breathe, swallow, or touch.
An allergy is a heightened sensitivity to a foreign
substance, which causes the body's immune system to overreact.
Allergies
can be caused by just about any substance that you breathe, swallow,
or touch.
When a person is exposed to a normally harmless
substance, and the immune system reacts as if the substance were
harmful, an allergic reaction occurs.
The immune system generally responds to this
reaction by releasing antibodies. These antibodies then release and
attach to certain cells commonly found in airways. The cells
then blow up and release histamines. Histamines are what cause
the allergy symptoms to occur.
Hay fever allergies tend to start at early childhood
and normally last until a person is around 40 years of age. The
age at which allergies tend to be at their highest peak when a person
is in their mid 20's.
