Pet Dander

Over 75% of households in the United States own either a dog or a cat.

Pet dander is generally found on animals with fur or feathers.  Dogs and cats are the most common, however pet dander is also found in hamsters, birds, horses, cows and even pigs.

According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, allergies to dogs or cats occur in approximately 15% of the population.

Normally it isn't the hair on your pet that causes an allergic reaction, but the old skin cells that are being shed constantly.

The best remedy for pet dander allergic reactions is avoidance.  If you already have a pet the best solution is to find it another home.  Another solution is to keep the pet out of the house.  Especially in those areas where the allergy sufferer frequents.

When pets are in the home, there is no avoiding the fact that there will be dander, hair, and contaminates emitted from their feces in the air your breathe. In which case, an air purifier is a good idea if you must have them, Air purifiers will help to eliminate airborne dander. The Surround Air Multi-Tech True HEPA air filter is effective against dust and all other airborne allergens (e.g. pollen, pet dander, mold spores, dust mites, etc.), as well as some bacteria.

Bathe your pet frequently. This will help to reduce airborne pet dander. There are many types of special pet shampoos to help with pet dander.

Some dog breeds appear to have less dander than others including: Poodles, Terriers and Schnauzers.

Clean your pets litter box, cage, etc. on a regular basis. It will also help to keep the litter box or cage away from the allergy sufferer.

Wash your hands and skin often.  This will wash off any dander from your pet that may have gotten on your skin.

Where possible, use flat surfaced flooring.  Many carpets tend to attract pet dander.  A smooth surfaced floor will make dander clean up much simpler.

Vacuum regularly with a filter type vacuum.

Examine your wardrobe. Woolen clothing will attract more pet dander than a freshly-washed cotton T-shirt.
